Whilst the Triumph Gloria, or Gloria Six (if you’ll forgive us our pedantry), may not be the most recognised motorcar ever produced by the mighty Triumph, to those in the know, it holds its place in history in rather high esteem. As told by one motoring journalist in an accompanying article from ‘The Automobile’ in 1991, the Gloria is “an enthusiast’s ideal”, and “beautifully finished, high quality”. (I should note too, this article featured a four-cylinder car at its centre, not a Big Six).
Our Gloria Six is a very accomplished car. The restoration has been expertly completed to a very high standard meaning this Triumph really is something to behold. By any fair measure, the 1476cc c13hp engine does not make for a fire-breathing sports car, but that would miss the point anyway. This is so much more gentle, with delicate features to the cabin and brightwork accents which set it apart. The engine bay alone is a work of art. Please take time to review our gallery of images to appreciate the care that’s been bestowed on the restoration of this Gloria.
There are differing opinions on exactly how many equivalent cars remain, but a handful only would be a sensible estimation. Given today’s cost and the limited supply of spare parts, materials, and skilled labour, makes it increasingly unlikely we’ll see an equivalent restoration of another to this standard again.
On our short test drive the six-cylinder engine behaved impeccably with the light gearchanges easy to master and reassuringly tight. The interior of this car is a real treat and a comfortable place to be, though I’d be mindful to perhaps only invite slight-framed passengers to enjoy it with you…. The leather, the carpets, the woodwork and the inventive door-cap design which swings on a hinge to form an extension where you can rest your elbow are all delicate 30’s features which are most pleasing.
Don’t take our word for it though, come and see for yourself what it is that most captivates you about this Gloria Six…
