Unlike Rolls-Royce, or Bentley, the Sunbeam Motor Company doesn’t necessarily feature highly when one thinks of pre-war motorcars, but it should. The quality and refinement of these cars, paired with many notable competition successes make Sunbeam a more than worthy part of the conversation.
The Twenty-Five model was manufactured from 1933 to 1935 and powered by a straight-six OHV engine of 3317cc, which was fed by a single Zenith carburettor. Well-equipped, the Twenty-Five featured an all-synchromesh four-speed gearbox, hydraulic brakes, and semi-elliptic suspension all round.
`AXM 597′ is a fine-looking example of the breed that hails from 1934, when it would have cost c.£875. The handsome Maroon over Black coachwork is a colour combination which really suits it, especially when contrasted with gloriously aged Brown leather interior, as present here. This is a car which has not only been comprehensively restored in recent years, but subtly upgraded too with the fitment of additional period-correct gauges and indicators disguised in the tail and side lights.
The engine has been thoroughly rebuilt and behaves impeccably. The cabin is an immensely comfortable place to be, and unlike many cars of this era, it’s quite simple and sympathetic to drive. The clutch is a delight, not like some 30’s cars!
