Current ownership since 1995, with just two former keepers, our lovely Traveller was first the property of one Mrs T. Davenport-Thomas. She kept ANJ at their grand Grade II listed Hall in Uckfield for nineteen years, before passing to Miss S. Lanier-Smith of Stow-on-the-Wold in 1990. It’s very safe to assume that ANJ has lived a privileged life…
That said, time takes a toll, so accordingly, after acquisition in 1995 the most recent keeper set about a thorough restoration in 1997/98. Hundreds of parts were ordered from Martin Roy Morris Minor Specialists, labour courtesy of a qualified local Yorkshire engineer, and engine work by Best Engines of York. By modern standards, the monies invested are relatively modest, but in 1998 with just £12p/h labour rates the spend totalling more than £5,000 was considerable & the result remains very pleasing, even now. Many elements of the restoration were photographed too, showing the breadth of the work undertaken.
The Snowberry White paintwork has stood up very well, the woodwork in particular is very good, and the engine appears to be in great health, starting readily, and delivering power smoothly – albeit, not infinitely!
Clocking up only modest mileage since restoration, more recently in 2013, some further £1,700 was invested with Heritage Car Company of Malton to treat ANJ to a bit of a birthday, including full check-over, new front brake drums and full brake strip & clean, change brake fluid, check and reset valve clearances, strip and clean carburettor, filters, etc. Plus, fitment of inertia type seatbelts and other sundry items.
All told, today our charming Traveller is quite irresistible. It claims a not-quite-warrantable but very believable 77,000 miles recorded and is offered in turn-key condition for immediate daily use if called upon.
